In this sermon we are in the midst of discussing, Jesus has already covered a number of topics. We read a condensed version of the beatitudes in vs. 20-23. Jesus then went on to warn his audience about playing the social class game. That was followed by a discussion of practical ways to live one’s faith, with the idea being that our actions speak louder than our words.
Beginning in vs. 39, we have a couple of parables to wrap up this sermon. Remember one key facet about parables: they were purposely vague in order to encourage the listeners to ask for more information. Also keep in mind last week’s discussion about making judgments and/or treating people according to social class. Jesus is about to get real by applying what he has already said.
