The Bible frequently mentions treasure in both the OT and NT. In each case, treasure has great value. It is desired; in some cases it is coveted. In the NT specifically, we are introduced to spiritual treasure. We are told to lay up that treasure in heaven.
We are going to see in today’s lesson that the heart, at least in this life, is a treasure chest of sorts. Whatever is in it is valuable to the individual. Unfortunately, what is found in the heart isn’t always good. And in fact, Scripture says Jer. 17:9 “The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked: who can know it?”
Over the course of the next several weeks, we are going to explore the heart as a treasure chest. We are going to see what Jesus says about it, as well as how we should respond to what he says. Needless to say that each of us has control over the treasure we choose to put in store.
