An Unfruitful Fig Tree – Lk. 13:1-17

As a born-again believer, you are probably familiar with the idea of Israel being God’s chosen people. But do you know what that means? I suspect a lot of Christians don’t. I didn’t know what it meant until after putting in many years of diligent study. Well, you won’t get the answer in today’s study. But today’s text will point you in the right direction. Take what you learn and apply it to your own study. Ask God to show you what it means to be God’s chosen people.

As for today’s text, we are going to see Jesus addressing an attitude commonly found in the Jews of his day. It was an attitude of superiority; an attitude of entitlement. This attitude was displayed more openly by the religious and political leaders of the day, but even the common people were guilty at times. Being followers of Christ and children of the Most High God, we have to be very careful to not let this attitude creep into our own hearts and minds.

As we study, think back on Theophilus. We haven’t talked about him much lately, but remember that Luke’s gospel is actually a letter written to him. Perhaps this portion of the letter was intended by the Holy Spirit to encourage Theophilus to check his own heart.
