Freedom is a curious thing. We value it here in the U.S. In so many other countries, freedom is not valued as strongly. There have been many cases in which oppressed people have been given their freedom but then didn’t know what to do with it. They wanted to go back to what they previously had – because at least they knew what to expect. A similar phenomenon exists within the prison system as well.
In a spiritual sense, the Galatian church was experiencing a similar struggle. The people of that congregation were freed from the curse of their moral law when they came to Christ. Now they don’t know how to live in that freedom, so they are prime targets for Judaizers who would attempt to enslave them to the Mosaic law. Paul’s desire is that they not only understand they are free in Christ, but that they also thrive in that freedom.
