Introduction to Titus – Titus 1:1-9
This week we begin a study of Paul’s letter to Titus. We don’t know much about the circumstances surrounding this letter, but it is eerily similar to Paul’s first letter to Timothy. Both Timothy and Titus were in similar positions; Timothy is in Ephesus while Titus is in Crete. Both men were left in their respective positions by Paul who chose them to be overseers, so to speak. Their main task was to organize the local believers in their respective regions. They were to set things in order by appointing church leaders, establishing structure, getting everyone on the same page, etc.
Underscoring this letter, as well as Paul’s two letters to Timothy, is the understanding that God is a God of order. He doesn’t do things haphazardly. Yes, God wants us to be open to the moving of the Holy Spirit. Yes, God often does things in ways that don’t make sense to humanity. We always have to be flexible enough to respond to what God wants to do with us. But God is still orderly in what he does. Chaos is not his MO.
