I Did It My Way – I Chron. Chpt. 13
Frank Sinatra recorded a song in late 1968 titled “My Way.” Released in early 1969, “My Way” went on to become Sinatra’s signature song. Turns out he hated it because he thought it was “was self-serving and self-indulgent.” That it was. The lyrics speak of a guy who lives life on his terms and makes no apologies for it.
We Americans tend to consider such a trait admirable. We value freedom and liberty so much that we exalt self over everything else. Not good. While the necessity to take responsibility for ourselves is clearly Biblical, there is still One who reigns over us supremely. That One is God himself. As Christians, we must never forget that we are to do things God’s way.
Today’s text will introduce us to one of David’s early mistakes as king. He tried to do things his way; one of his men ended up dead. In addition, the whole scenario was set up by the fact that Saul had decided to do things his way years earlier. The story in I Chron. 13, if nothing else, is a reminder that ignoring God’s way in favor of our own never ends well.
