COVID-19: A Lesson in Why the Truth Should Matter to Christians

Here at Disruptive Reality, our last three Bible study videos have focused on a key principle found in John chapter 8: being made free by the truth. The truth is incredibly important to me. It is critical to my existence. Therefore, it’s difficult for me to understand why so many of my fellow believers don’t seem to be concerned about it.
If we do not have the truth, we have nothing of value. How can we worship the Living God if we do not know the truth of who he is? How can we live a life pleasing to the LORD if we don’t know and understand the truth of how to do it?
Truth Is a Fundamental Concept
Jesus said in Jn. 8:31+32, “If you continue in my word, then are you my disciples indeed; and you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.” As Christians, we have already been made free from the guilt of sin. That happened at the moment of salvation. But then why did Jesus tell the believers in John chapter 8 to continue in his word and be made free?
Because delivering us from the guilt of sin did not subsequently deliver us from bondage to the world. We still live in this world. It still has a grip on us to one degree or another. More importantly, the world is one big lie. We are pummeled with lies day in and day out, with no end in sight.
Note that Jesus went on to say in Jn. 17:17, “Sanctify them through your truth: your word is truth.” Jesus was speaking to God the Father in that text. Therefore, the truth he was referring to is God’s Word. We know that Word as the Bible.
If we do not study and apply the Word, we don’t have the truth. And if we don’t have the truth, we have the only other alternative: a lie. I don’t know about you, but I don’t want to live a life of lies. I want to live a life based on the truth.
It’s a Practical Thing
It’s easy to talk about the truth of God’s Word and apply it only to spiritual matters. But there is a practical side here. What we believe dictates how we live. It dictates what we think, how we see the world, who we align ourselves with, etc. And all of that ultimately impacts the spiritual side of our lives.
Take the COVID pandemic. Everything about it was controversial right from the start. It is a perfect example for this post because it illustrates what happens to Christians when they do not pursue the truth.
To begin with, the fact remains that the entire COVID pandemic was a scam. Yes, the virus is real. People do get sick from it. But COVID-19 was never the global killer it was made out to be. How do I know? The official numbers prove it.
Run the Numbers Yourself
I have been running the numbers on COVID since April 2020. I ran them again yesterday to see if anything has changed. Nothing has. You can run the exact same numbers yourself by using statistics provided by the UN, CDC, or any number of government organizations. Their own numbers prove they are liars.
The global population right now is roughly 8 billion. Total COVID infections to date are just over 702 million. Total COVID deaths to date are approximately 6.9 million. A simple mathematical equation demonstrates that just 8% of the total population has tested positive for the virus. And that’s ignoring the fact that the total caseload includes people who have had the virus multiple times.
Among those who have contracted the virus, the survivability rate is 99.1%. You simply divide the total number of deaths by the total number of cases to arrive at that number. Last but not least, when you consider the number of deaths against the entire global population, the survivability rate is 99.992%.
Christians Living in Fear
I could run numbers from the CDC and get similar results for the U.S. I won’t because it’s unnecessary. The point is that you have a fairly low chance of contracting coronavirus. Better yet, you have an astronomically low chance of dying from it. And yet, how many Christians still live in fear of it today?
Four years ago, churches were shutting down. Some were afraid of the virus, others were afraid of the local government, others were afraid of both. To this day, churches are still struggling to bring their people back. Many are still requiring face coverings. And unfortunately, I know Christians who have not returned to church because they are scared to death of getting sick.
Contrary to Scripture
Isn’t this contrary to scripture? Absolutely. God wants us to fear him. He wants us to be afraid of the one who can steal our souls (Matt. 10:28). Yet he doesn’t want a fearing man or what man can do to us. Scripture says so. By extension, that means he doesn’t want us to live in fear of government oppression, medical emergencies, or just about anything else. Look for yourself and see how many times the Bible tells us to ‘fear not’.
Because Christians have bought into the COVID lie, many live in fear. This is not a minor issue. Living in fear prevents a Christian from fully serving God. Living in fear prevents him from understanding scripture. It interrupts nearly every aspect of Christian discipleship.
I could go on but I am out of time and space. Here’s the point: not pursuing the truth as a Christian means continuing to be in bondage to the lie. That’s not for me. Truth is important to me as a Christian. It’s important to me as a human being. How about you?
