Our Exciting, Mysterious Faith – I Pet. 1:1-12
Peter’s first epistle was written to Jewish believers scattered throughout Asia Minor, somewhere around 64 A.D., as an encouragement for them to persevere in their faith. They were being persecuted by their own people. Meanwhile, the Roman persecution was just getting started as well.
The book was written from the city of Babylon (5:13), and this appears to be ancient Babylon on the Euphrates; probably a rebuilt city near the site of the original which was destroyed by the Greeks. During Peter’s lifetime the cities and towns in that region had a well known Jewish population. In addition, it was situated right on the edge of the Roman Empire.
Lastly, Jesus called Peter to the office of pastor Jn. 21:15-19, just before he ascended to glory. This letter bears all the markings of a pastor who is teaching, exhorting, and confirming doctrine in a congregation he cares for.
