Humility: The Precursor to Change – Psalms 38+39

Back in the 1980’s and ’90s I spent quite a bit of time involved in prison ministries. I learned there were two types of convicts. First were those who owned what they had done, accepted doing their time, and committed to keeping their heads down and bettering themselves. The second group were those who didn’t own up. They blamed something or someone else. Some were even proud of what they had done.

The first group were the exception to the rule. But they were also the group whose lives were changed by the experience. The second group saw no change. If anything, prison only made them harder, more angry, and more likely to stick to the same path once they got out. What was the big difference between the two? Humility. When it comes to matters of the heart, mind, and will, humility is always the precursor to change.
